As for Fishburne, the actor, surprisingly, was never approached for the new movie. In Weaving’s case, scheduling conflicts prevented him from appearing, which raises a few questions about Neo’s role in the film without his opposite. The most obvious omissions from the line-up so far are Hugo Weaving’s iconic baddie, Agent Smith, and Laurence Fishburne’s equally inimitable Morpheus. While there is speculation that other familiar faces might appear, they’ve yet to be announced. A couple of smaller supporting characters will also return: Daniel Bernhardt reprises his role as Agent Johnson from The Matrix Reloaded, and Lambert Wilson returns as the trafficker of information, the Merovingian, from Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Carrie-Anne Moss also returns as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith is back as Niobe, though she isn’t in the trailer. The beloved actor returns as Neo, this time rocking his signature John Wick look. It wouldn’t be The Matrix without Keanu Reeves. Even with all there is to see in the new trailer, so many questions still remain. Of course, these mind games wouldn’t pack nearly the same punch without glorious Wachowski-stylized action, which now looks inspired in part by the Keanu Reeves–starring John Wick films (ironically, the work of fight choreographer Chad Stahelski, who doubled as Neo and served as stunt coordinator for the original trilogy). The new trailer leans hard into nostalgia (hello, “White Rabbit”), but once-familiar characters are now seemingly strangers to themselves and to each other. And it suggests that The Matrix Resurrections will live up to the original trilogy’s legacy of entertaining and challenging science fiction. Shifting release dates cast some doubt over whether the film is actually coming out this year, but the first full-length trailer is finally here.
After 18 years, The Matrix is back, though it’s not the same as we left it. It’s not a remake, reboot, or reimagining. But we only know just how many secrets it’s hiding thanks to the things it does reveal.Free your mind. There’s so much this trailer isn’t showing us. But that Zion appears abandoned and in decay. It’s not a great sign for humans the machine world still looks robust. It’s also possible the peace between man and machine finally broke. One easy to believe when it once led you out of the rabbit hole and to the person you love. This time a white rabbit might be a false promise. Things are never quite as they seem in the Matrix. Why does he look different when Neo and Trinity look the same? Considering we don’t know who or what needs Neo, or if someone/something is manipulating him with memories of his past life, we can’t believe everything we see here. It’s not totally clear, though, this version of Morpheus can be trusted. Take the red pill and go on a new journey. He’s taking them by the handful at the start of the trailer and pouring them down a drain later.Ī seemingly younger Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, also presents Neo with the same choice he did long ago.
The type of blue pill that would have kept Neo caged in the original film is even more abundant now. He also has a blue butterfly in his office. Neo’s therapist, Neil Patrick Harris, wears blue glasses and a blue sweater. While this trailer reveals very little about plot, it does also provide a potential big bad.
Why do they need him? What purpose could they have? Another threat? Something worse than even Agent Smith? At some point they seem to make a new Neo body. Even more telling is that the machines are not only taking care of it, they have him connected to their virtual world. His eyes are burned away, which happened in The Matrix: Revolutions. Neo’s body as seen in two quick flashes might be the single most revealing moment of this trailer. Both of their physical bodies exist in the real world. Neither character is merely a memory in a machine, though. He can stop bullets, redirect rockets, and is essentially a Jedi with Force powers. But he’s still a force to be reckoned with inside this virtual prison. They also both have their powers within the Matrix. The two don’t know each other at first, but they each feel a past connection with the other. He’s living in a fancy San Francisco apartment and not in a dingy New York City one.
